In Episode 3 of Sense in the City Sydney – Jocelyn Fullerton talks about a ‘Mood Lifter’ – Strong hot chocolate with orange blossom. Here’s the recipe.
Ingredients
- 1tbs Good quality ‘dutched’ cocoa powder
- boiling water
- a dash of cassia cinnamon powder
- a few drops of vanilla essence
- a few drops of orange blossom water.
- Maple syrup or dark muscovado sugar to sweeten if desired.
Method
- Put the cocoa powder in your cup, add just enough boiling water to make a paste and stir well to remove any lumps. While stirring, add more water to fill the cup.
- Add the vanilla, a dash of cinnamon powder and stir well. Add sweetener if desired to taste and a few drops of orange blossom water.
- Sit back, take a deep breath and inhale the scents.
- Enjoy.
This is my favourite way to give a lift in the afternoon when you’re flagging in energy and need a lift. Also perfect with a book and a cozy space on a rainy day! Cocoa powder(Van Houten/Valrhona) or any powder with a rich dark brown/red/violet colour. It’s higher in flavonoids, rich in flavour and still has some cocoa butter for richness.
The Cortas brand of orange blossom water is excellent, and for a lovely variation rosewater is also good in this.
I prefer this one black, strong and bitter as I’m not fond of milk and don’t have much of a sweet tooth, but it’s nice with a splash of almond milk as well
