HooCut – True Pitta

HooCut True Pitta Athens

If you are interested in the food-scene of Greece and Athens, seek out the 3rd series of Gordon, Gino and Fred: Road Trip where Gordon Ramsay, Gino D’Acampo and Fred Sirieix try to do a ‘Top Gear’ for food.

Episode 2, named ‘Clash of Three Titans’ begins in Athens with some stunning drone footage and a very brief shot of a historic Pitta / Souvlaki place before descending into inane silliness.

Of all the eateries in the city these food personalities and influencers could have showcased, they chose ‘HooCut – True Pitta‘.

Situated on a busy side-street near Monastiraki, continuously buzzing with food delivery motorbikes and taxis, HOOCUT aims to provide ‘fast but not hasty, quality street food’.

The menu is a combination of traditional favourites and modern variations. On the ‘True Pitta’ list is pork, chicken, beef, lamb – even squid. There are also some salads and sides including various loaded fries.

We visited on a Friday lunchtime in November, ordering inside and eating at an outside table as per pandemic measures. It was a quick bite and we chose a couple of pitta’s and plain fries. It wasn’t busy – there were a few spare tables, but even so – it’s not fast food.

More Foodie Experiences in Athens

The Lamb True Pitta – Hoocut Spiced Sauce, Tzatziki, White Cabbage, Tomato, Red Onion, Paprika: was okay. Nothing special. Hoocut has it’s own bakery and the pitta is handmade. The TV show made a point of this… and it’s a good wrap – light, fluffy and tasty. I couldn’t really taste the spiced sauce. The lamb was well cooked – not fatty – but also not overly warm… not sure how hot it would be if you had it delivered by Wolt.

The Black Pig Sausages True Pitta – Hoocut Spiced Sauce, Tzatziki, Honey-Mustard Dressing, Cabbage, Tomato, Red Onion, Paprika: was a bit of a disappointment. A single thin sausage overpowered by chilli (not advertised in the menu) and the mustard dressing. I was expecting a flavourful Greek village sausage that can be found everywhere in Athens. Sometimes it’s better to stick to the traditional menu options.

The fries were good though!

This concept would work well as a food-truck. It’s cheap and cheerful and good. Perfect for a quick lunch, but maybe slightly over-hyped. In my opinion there are better pitta options in Athens – but let us know what you think.
